Bolton is part of Greater Manchester and lies ten miles north of the city. The town grew rapidly in the 19th century and made its wealth in the cotton trade. The “spinning Mule” which revolutionised cotton-spinning was invented in Bolton by its famous resident Samuel Crompton. Like many Northern towns, industry has steadily declined however the town is the sixth largest employment centre in the entire north west and enjoys strong links with both the core cities of Manchester and Salford and other parts of Lancashire, like Blackburn, Preston and Chorley.
