Dr Who, Torchwood and Casualty are just three of the more visible signs of the city's media industries. BBC Wales has championed the media sector of the city which contributes an estimated £25m to the local economy. The Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Studies (part of the University of Glamorgan) invested in an Atrium campus which has helped produce some of the most exciting UK talent in this industry. Journalism, film, drama, art, music and other aspects of the media are all studied here and many local firms have sprung up to make use of that talent.

Perhaps it's the delightful Welsh accent that led to the growth of this industry, reliant for much of its work on telephone communication with customers. More than 30,000 people - 20 per cent of the work force - can be found in the finance sector alone. Among the major employers are Legal and General, HM Inspector of Taxes, the AA, Admiral Insurance - the list goes on. Customer care is just one aspect but many new employees - particularly post-graduates - will be required to sit professional exams in accounting, auditing or other aspects of the industry. It's hard work, long hours but potentially very rewarding financially.

St David's, Queen's Arcade and the Capitol Centre are just some of the many shopping areas attracting shoppers and tourists from throughout Wales and western England. The likes of Dorothy Perkins, Gap and Boots are just some of the big names you'll find offering a structured career in the retail industry. They also offer plenty of part-time work and short-term contracts for those needing less structured employment.

Cardiff University is the magnet that has drawn more than a hundred bioscience firms to this corner of Wales. The likes of Shaw Healthcare, Gensis Biosciences and Cesagen make good use of the highly skilled post graduates working in a range of science fields from genetics to ageing.
