Being 'sent to Coventry' is usually an insult, a phrase meaning people are going to ignore you. Have no such fears if you really are sent to Coventry - it's a warm and welcoming place with just enough of that warm Brummy accent to make you feel you're in good company. It is traditionally a car-making centre with the likes of Jaguar, Rover and Rootes at one time employing thousands of people here. Sadly, the car manufacture business has all but vanished but it's legacy is a strong engineering and knowledge base in the city.
The city of Coventry - almost completely rebuilt after World War II due to German bombing - sits alongside its bigger neighbour, Birmingham, in the West Midlands. And while many jobseekers are happy to commute to Birmingham, the city is capable of sustaining numerous large employers. The M6, M69 and M1 are close enough to ensure the city is a good transport hub for the Midlands and also attract shoppers, tourists and major business or cultural events.

Coventry City Council is the largest employer by far with more than 15,000 employees looking after more than a quarter of a million residents. Health, social care, housing, planning, sports, tourism and schools are just some of the sectors you can enter with a career at the council. Jobseekers with few or many qualifications are required for the various roles (including post graduates). Watch out as well for apprenticeship schemes available.
Health is another big employer in the area. The Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Partnership Trust employs about 3,500 people and the University Hospital at Coventry (usually just called Walsgrave!) employs 6,500 itself. Add in the many support organisations and you begin to appreciate the number of jobs within the health sector. You don't need degrees in medical science - the NHS employ people in care, admin, management, logistics and customer service. The Trust provides a well organised training structure of its own which includes NVQs, leadership and management qualifications as well as other training modules.
Coventry's prominence as a car manufacture may have dwindled but it's certainly not dead and buried. Jaguar Land Rover at Whitley produces the vehicles and is also the headquarters of the company. Apprentices, undergraduates, graduates and experienced professionals are all welcome. Peugeot also has its headquarters in Coventry and may also become the HQ for its sister company, Citroen.
Asda, Morrison, Tesco and Sainsbury are among the big-name stores offering careers in retail. It's a line of work with ample opportunity for career progression and options to move into specialist sectors such as logistics, management, personnel or marketing.
Coventry FC may have sunk from its once great heights of the Premiership but the city has a fine sport tradition. Sport is administered by the council and by the likes of the Coventry Sports Foundation managing the likes of the Alan Higgs Centre and running structured sports programmes and youth events.
