Job Prospects in Loughborough

This developing university and market town is located in the Charnwood borough of Leicestershire. The town is the biggest settlement apart from Leicester in Leicestershire with a population of 57,600. In terms of transport, the rail network is of growing importance, as it is connected to London St Pancras International. With Eurostar International services this means that the town is almost directly connected to the continent. Junction 23 and 24 of the M1 connect it to other parts of the country by road.

The focal point of shopping in the area is the pedestrianized Market Place and Market Street, which has several original art deco buildings including the town’s current cinema. A large outdoor market takes place twice a week. Further and Higher education is a big factor in the makeup of the town, bringing thousands of students in every year. Loughborough University and Loughborough College are the main tertiary education providers in the town.

Tertiary Education

The University is held in very high regard and regularly ranks in the top ten in the country. The biggest employer in the town over 15,000 students enrolled, which works out at over a quarter of the town’s population. It employs over 3000 people in a wide variety of roles, from cleaners to lecturers and management, providing many employment opportunities. Loughborough College is also an important part of the local economy, with over 12,000 students and an annual turnover in excess of £19m.

Sport

Loughborough University is home to the most comprehensive sports development programme of any university in the country, and this sporting excellence is also important to the local economy. This is demonstrated by the fact that the Japanese Olympic team chose the town as their base for the 2012 Olympics, boosting the economy.
