Newcastle upon Tyne - to give it its full title and differentiate it from the other Newcastle in Staffordshire - is inextricably linked with its 'twin sister' on the south of the Tyne: Gateshead. Together, they both form an economic powerhouse punching above their weight, working through the likes of Invest Newcastle Gateshead.
The area is famed for its heavy industry and ship building but in 2005 it was named a Science City and, with its two universities, has carved out a new route for its economy in science and knowledge-based industries. It aims to impose the strong Newcastle brand, responsible for the likes of the Angel of the North, on the new 21st century industries in order to make them world leaders and sustain the area's 1m working population.
