Games expert offers advice for job seekers

The video games industry is thriving, and many young people may be looking to get into the industry. Having a job which mirrors a hobby is one of the best career options for those who want to have a happy and fulfilled working life, making a job in gaming ideal for many people. For those looking at gaming jobs in London, Peter Molyneux, head of Lionhead Studios, has offered some welcome advice.

There is a lot of competition for jobs within the computer games industry because thousands of gamers around the world are keen to be able to play and create their own platforms for others to enjoy. One of the best ways to help land a lucrative employment contract is to work on a game idea, with Mr Molyneux saying: “Get together a few friends – it’s exactly what I did – to help you with the things you can’t do, to draw graphics, to do sounds. Release your game on any one of the formats that are out there on phones and on Facebook and on XBLA and Sony Home – there’s a huge amount of places to actually release games.”

Meanwhile, gaming testing is another good avenue for job seekers to explore, with Mr Molyneux saying that many current Lionhead designers started as testers. Testing games as part of a panel, and being passionate and offering constructive feedback, all make candidates appeal to employers. With companies always looking out for the next bright spark and big idea, gaming testers could find a great career simply by offering their help and support initially.
