It has been confirmed by gaming company Codemasters that it is to create 100 new positions in the West Midlands. The Leamington Spa jobs will offer the majority of the positions, with the head office hiring 75 people for the ongoing running of the business. Meanwhile, 25 people will be hired to join Birmingham’s 120-strong development team and create new games.
The news will be welcomed by the local games industry, with Business Birmingham, an organisation that promotes the region, saying that the Codemasters announcement would build confidence in the city. The region already offers jobs to almost 25% of Britain’s gaming workforce, with technology and digital companies heading to the area because of the highly skilled individuals.
Codemasters’ Simon Miles revealed that the West Midlands had the right employees for the new positions. “The skilled talent pool in Birmingham, along with the support available for developers in the area, and across the Midlands generally, has created a dynamic and creative local business community,” he said, adding: “We are looking to recruit staff from the region as well as enticing some new employees into the city as well.”
Having been founded in 1986, Codemasters is particularly known for its driving games, with its Formula One title having been used by real drivers to help them prepare for races. The games industry continues to be big business around the world, and for many people who love nothing more than playing popular titles on their PC and console systems, breaking into the gaming industry would offer an exciting and fulfilling career.
