Retail is a sizeable source of jobs in Preston, and the city has a wealth of busy shopping streets and retail parks. The two main shopping centres are Fishergate and St George’s, where department stores such as Debenhams, and a string of high street names, both national and independent, can be found. The prestigious University of central Lancashire, is one of the UK’s biggest universities. It is also a major employer in the region, offering a range of careers in education and training. There are two major call centre operations in Preston, creating job opportunities for those with customer service skills. Carphone Warehouse runs one and the other is operated by Homeserve plc, the emergency home repairs service.

Preston was built up on trade and industry during the Industrial Revolution but it has evolved to meet demands for more modern jobs. Some of the other big employers in the city include Alstom transport, Matalan Retail Ltd and various national distribution companies.
