"Come, friendly bombs, and fall on Slough!" said the poet John Betjeman. In some ways, he needn't have worried. The town planners are doing the job for him. Many buildings in the town centre are being demolished to make way for a new town centre. The Heart of Slough project will see millions of pounds invested in modern buildings, new shopping centres, a cultural quarter and a new media 'village'.
Slough has suffered from its association with giant trading estate which provides employment for thousands of people living in the area. The estate is gigantic: it covers 486 acres, is home to around 500 businesses including Telefonica O2, Ferrari and Black & Decker. It even has its own power station. It wasn't too surprising that Ricky Gervais decided to the fictional paper company Wernham Hogg on Slough Trading Estate when he filmed the TV comedy, The Office. There is plenty more to Slough (and its next to some beautiful Berkshire countryside including Burnham Beeches) but for jobseekers it offers probably the best opportunities in the UK.

In addition to the companies mentioned above, there are hundreds more covering such sectors as food processing, engineering, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, logistics, IT and telecommunications. Although many multi-nationals are based here, watch out as well for the Enterprise Quarter which is home to many start-up companies, offering you the chance to get in on the ground floor. The confectionery company, Mars, is one of the biggest employers on the estate. They offer jobs in Finance and Procurement, Production and Innovation, Marketing and Sales and Business Support. They also recruit graduates either for specific jobs or as part of their three-year management development programme.
O2 is just one - but probably the biggest - player in the communications sector at Slough. Jobs on offer include sales, service, retail, IT and management. They offer operations apprenticeships and finance programmes for graduates. The company also offers its own training programmes of course for school leavers or those applying for their first job.
