This ancient Capital of England still likes to think of itself as the 'capital' of Hampshire at least. In this county town you'll find the headquarters of Hampshire County Council, a crown court, a cathedral and its own barracks (Sir John Moore Barracks). It's just one hour from London and its idyllic rural setting - the South Downs national park nudges up to the city boundary - has made it one of the wealthiest cities in the UK. A large number of residents leave the city each morning and many workers commute in to London.
The city has some small industry - at Winnall for example - but much of Winchester is devoted to services. Primarily through the county council or city council but also through shops, business services and tourism. That's no bad thing: the compact size of Winchester makes it a pleasant place to work and shop.

At the bottom of the hill in the Guildhall is Winchester City Council - and at the top in the Castle is Hampshire County Council. Both employ large numbers as they seek to provide services for the 40,000 residents of the city and beyond. The county council offers apprenticeships and both councils take on school leavers and graduates for either part-time, fulltime or more structured careers.
Winchester's Cathedral is just one of the many tourist attractions - other historic buildings, museums, the water meadows and South Downs also bring in thousands of tourists each year. You'll find jobs on the 'front line' as tour guides, gift shop assistants or similar, as well as careers in marketing or the management side of tourism.
